Big Innovations from a Big Island
As big as France, twice the size of Arizona, Madagascar is the world’s fourth-largest island — 1000 miles end to end.
It is one of the poorest countries in the world, with a diverse population and geography, challenging infrastructure, and critical conservation issues.
If a technology solution can work here, it can work anywhere.
David McAfee, HNI’s Co-Founder, knew Madagascar well. He had managed a nationwide public health project in Madagascar from 1999 to 2004.
David became frustrated having to make key decisions without good data. It was this frustration that motivated him to found and to lead HNI.
The “human network” refers to families across the developing world connected by simple, inexpensive mobile phones to meet their communications needs.
David returned to Madagascar 2008 to find ways to help organizations and individuals to use the phones and devices they already own in innovative, productive and sustainable ways.
Since our modest beginning in 2008, HNI has grown rapidly. We have worked with dozens of partners across multiple sectors.
We’ve grown because organizations recognize the importance of putting information and communication technology — ICT — to work for development — 4D: ICT4D
We now have a large staff of professionals: trainers, developers, and managers whose passion is to accelerate development by building the capacity of others to use technology in smart and innovative ways.
