Population Services International is a global health organization with programs targeting malaria, child survival, HIV, and reproductive health. Working in partnership within the public and private sectors, and harnessing the power of the markets, PSI provides life-saving products, clinical services and behavior change communications that empower the world’s most vulnerable populations to lead healthier lives.
Among the many different functions that PSI Madagascar performs is a component requiring staff to go into remote areas promoting Care condoms. This is the project that PSI has started using DataWinners for to effectively accomplish. Staff record sessions of the number of people they have reached on a daily basis and report these figures at the end of the month. The figures are written on paper and sent to head office then later captured manually for reporting.
Challenges. Manual data entry resulted in errors if the data collectors’ writing was not legible. Sometimes data entry documents would delay to arrive resulting in reporting being completed late. Also, someone at the head office spent a lot of time doing data entry for all the different districts. Additionally, it was difficult to verify where exactly a data collection session was conducted as there was no gadget to record GPS location of a data collector.
Action taken –PSI Madagascar has started using DataWinners to capture data for their Care female condom project. Each user has been equipped with a smartphone and now collects data offsite then sends the data online after data entry is completed.
The Result – Currently the manual system and electronic are being used together for testing purposes and they will be a complete change to DataWinners very soon. It has proved to be more reliable, faster, and eliminates errors due multiple data entry points. Figures can now be updated and checked daily online and the provided charts also give good summaries of the data as it arrives.
